Louis Vuitton Handbags impact on our handbag mania is a little different from other handbag manufacturers who either came from saddlery or couture.
The reason why is because our man Vuitton was actually around packing Empress Eugenie’s clothes in 1853. Who? Okay, you ever heard of Napoleon?
Okay - Louis Vuitton History 101. Alright class - now pay attention…
Emperor Napoleon I (you know, the short guy) had a brother Luis, who married the princess of Holland at the time. They had a kid, called him Louis Napoleon, too. This guy marries Eugenie (de Montijo) and they rule France for a while in what we now call the Second Empire (circa 1852). Here’s where Louis Vuitton comes in.
Louis Vuitton’s job was to pack Empress Eugenie’s clothes for long trips. I guess there can be worse jobs, right?
Apparently, Mr. Vuitton took his job seriously and he was quite an innovator, too. In 1954, he develops the flat trunk. This way the decadently rich can take all their clothes with them when they go on long trips and not run out of floor room.
The trunks before Mr. Vuitton came around had domed tops, which prevented them from stacking on top of each other.
Not content to rest on his laurels, Louis Vuitton continued to make new designs with his travel luggage.
In 1872, Louis Vuitton comes up with his signature beige and red stripes. That signature monogram canvas goes back a long way, too, all the way back to 1896. Fast forward to 1932.
Okay, here’s where you can let your breathe out. Louis Vuitton designs what would become his first in the Louis Vuitton handbags range: the Noe. Originally, he created the Noe for a vintner to carry his prized champagne bottles around with him.
If you don’t want to carry around a bag that your grandmother might have carried, don’t worry. Louis Vuitton handbags have thought of you, too. In 1998, Marc Jacobs, (that’s right, THE Marc Jacobs) joined Louis Vuitton as Artistic Director. He went on to create many new lines for the Louis Vuitton Handbags, including the Monogram Vernis, which is not your grandmother’s Louis Vuitton.
At around the beginning of the 2000’s, Marc Jacobs teamed up with a Japenese designer by the name of Takashi Murakami. Between them they’ve created some of the most sought after designer handbags, including lines such as the Louis Vuitton Cherry Blossom and the Louis Vuitton Multicolor! Each of them iconic, dazzling in their upbeat colors and highly prized pieces.
Most of Louis Vuitton’s handbags will have the classic Vuitton monogram in one shape or the other, whether they are printed on the canvas, embossed on leather, woven in the satin material, or even impressed in rubber.
The collections are differentiated based on what materials are used. Most of the collections have the same silhouettes: small barrels, hobos, satchels, totes, and flap-overs. Most if not all of his handbags will use leather trim and upscale warm gold colored hardware.
Louis Vuitton handbags cost anywhere from about $450.00 upto and beyond $2,500.00. Some special order pieces can cost $3 or $4,000 each. If you want to spend more for pure quality, go ahead and look at his beautiful collections of travel bags, briefcases and trunks.
