Okay, I don’t know quite where Tods handbags got it’s name from, but maybe “Filippo Della Valle” would be a bit much?
That’s who founded Tod’s back in 1900 as a shoe factory.
Fast forward to the 1970s when Filipp’s grandson, Diego took that little shoe factory and went berserk with it.
What happened?
Well, little Diego, aged 21 at the time, got tired of turning out quality shoes for other luxury lines. Why not put out their own shoes? And that’s what he set out to do. Ten years later, he practically owned the luxury shoe market.
In 2000, Della Valle went public with his company in order to get more money for expansions. Looks like they won’t be going anywhere which is good for lovers of Tods handbags!
The shoe fashion world has never been the same since Della Valle. But I’m not talking about four inch heels - I’m talking about Tod’s iconic driving shoe. Come on, I know you know what I’m talking about. Maybe you didn’t realize who came up with it?
It’s that little soft shoe with the bumpy pebbles on the bottom. (I have to confess I’ve never been totally clear on whether you’re supposed to wear those things when you’re not driving?) At least carrying Tods handbags has fewer rules to follow right?
In order to do Tods handbags justice, I’ve got to start with their D bag in calfskin ($1,100.00). Classic. If you can only afford one of the Tods handbags this should be it, in my humble opinion. Ignoring the whole fake v authenticc arguements, don’t buy a cheaper knock-off. It will bother you, trust me. This is a large shopping tote style handbag that you will find in a number of bright colors: red, orange, yellow, and lime. You can also get the bag in suede red or tan ($1,200.00). You can get the new mini D bag in either calfskin or suede ($800.00).
Looking for something a little more rockstar from Tods handbags? Go for their Charlotte mini in snakeskin. You definitely won’t find any grannies carrying this around (unless they’re Marianne Faithful, for heaven’s sake). These cuties will set you back $895.00 and you can get them in a green that looks like it might have been the snake’s original color, wine, pecan brown, or a pale gray blue.
That’s certainly not all you’ll find in the Tods collection right now. The Venghe line (mini $725.00; regular size $1150.00) offers a traditional handbag style with some very unique Tod like hardware and trim. Pick this up in calfskin with python trim in tan, green, and red. Other colors are available base on the materials used on the trim.
If you find Tods handbags a little out of your reach, go for Tod’s s.p.a.’s Fay line. They’re a little more sportier (read cheaper) but use the same quality in design and construction.
